smithmaranllc is an award-winning architecture and interior design firm founded in 1997 in Montclair, New Jersey, by Erik Maran and Ira Smith. The office has been recognized for its ability to create outstanding public and private environments for a wide range of clients, from homeowners to Fortune 500 clients. In its corporate, property development and institutional work, Smith Maran often provides multi-scale turn-key design and project management, particularly for clients who lack the internal design staff required to manage such projects. In its mixed-use work, along with basic architectural services, Smith Maran regularly provides feasibility work in the form of preliminary design and surveying, concept and branding studies, code analysis and capital plan budgeting.Erik Maran, Principal, received his Masters in Architecture from the School of Art and Architecture, Yale University, and holds a B.A. from Columbia College, Columbia University. Erik is a founding member of the Montclair Center Corporation, a downtown business improvement district, and currently serves as its President. Erik is a registered architect in New York and New Jersey. Erik has been an architectural critic at Bennington College and the School of Architecture at Columbia University, and has served as an Adjunct Professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Ira Smith, Principal, received his Masters in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and holds a B.A. from Columbia College, Columbia University. Ira currently serves as Chair of the Montclair Historic Preservation Commission. Ira's award-winning urban architectural proposals and graphic design projects have been exhibited in New York and Atlanta. Ira has taught as Adjunct Professor of architectural design and theory at Bennington College and the Schools of Architecture at Columbia University, the University of Texas at Austin, Northeastern University, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
